When Empathy Becomes a Biological Liability
Why Your Greatest Gift Is Destroying Your Nervous System
If you are a woman healer over 50—a counselor, nurse, physician, educator—you were likely praised your entire career for your empathy.
Your ability to feel deeply.
To attune.
To sit with pain without flinching.
Empathy made you exceptional at your job.
But no one told you the truth.
That same empathy is rewiring your brain—and your nervous system cannot tell the difference between their trauma and yours anymore.
This is not a mindset issue.
This is not a resilience failure.
This is biology.
And if you’re exhausted, numb, resentful, overwhelmed, or quietly fantasizing about disappearing from a career you once loved, you are not broken.
You are biologically overloaded.
The Biological Reality Nobody Taught You
In In Pursuit of Soul Joy, I state something plainly that should make every woman healer angry:
Burnout and compassion fatigue are occupational hazards, not personal weaknesses.
In 2021, nearly 78 percent of mental health professionals reported being impacted by burnout and compassion fatigue. That number rose sharply during and after the pandemic, when demand exploded and support collapsed.
That statistic matters because it tells us something essential:
If almost 4 out of 5 clinicians are struggling, the problem is not individual failure—it is systemic biological injury.
And here’s the part most training programs never taught you.
Your Brain Cannot Tell Whose Trauma This Is
Neuroscience confirms what your body already knows.
Your brain—any brain—cannot distinguish between:
witnessing trauma
hearing trauma
imagining trauma
or experiencing trauma directly
When a patient recounts panic, abuse, grief, or terror, your amygdala activates as if it is happening to you.
Your polyvagal system fires.
Your body releases cortisol and adrenaline.
Your nervous system enters survival mode.
As I write in In Pursuit of Soul Joy:
“The crazy thing about all this is that your brain, any brain, can’t discern between your trauma and your client’s trauma. Your body’s response is the same—a triggered polyvagal system.”
This is not you being “too sensitive.”
This is human neurobiology doing exactly what it evolved to do: protect you from threat.
The problem is volume and repetition.
One trauma story? Your body can metabolize that.
Two thousand a year, for decades? That is cumulative devastation.
What Decades of Empathic Exposure Steal From You
Over time, this relentless cycle of stress hormones alters your system.
In the Mind
Burnout creates:
excessive self-concern
loneliness
dread
powerlessness
loss of joy
Your world shrinks. Everything becomes risk management. Creativity disappears. Curiosity dies.
In the Body
Chronic nervous system activation leads to:
immune suppression
frequent illness
digestive problems
chronic pain
hormonal chaos
exhaustion that sleep does not fix
You are tired at a cellular level.
In the Soul
Compassion fatigue creates:
emotional numbness
isolation
loss of meaning
the terrifying sense that you’ve lost yourself
You function. You show up. But you feel hollow.
That emptiness is not failure.
It is your system signaling injury.
Why This Hits Women Over 50 Harder
If you are over 50, there is another layer no one prepared you for.
Estrogen plays a critical role in:
stress resilience
cortisol buffering
nervous system flexibility
As estrogen declines during perimenopause and menopause, your nervous system loses protection.
The same workload that was difficult at 35 becomes biologically punishing at 55.
This is not aging.
This is not weakness.
This is physiology colliding with an unsustainable system.
And nowhere is this more evident than in your Heart Chakra.
Heart Chakra Psychology: When Empathy Becomes Depletion
Your Heart Chakra—Anahata—is the energy center of:
compassion
love
devotion
emotional connection
It is the reason you chose healing work.
But in compassion fatigue, the Heart Chakra becomes a one-way valve.
Energy flows out.
Nothing flows back in.
Over time, depletion sets in.
When this chakra becomes underactive, you experience:
emotional numbness
anger and resentment
loneliness
emotional distance
cynicism
heart-centered health issues
This is not you becoming cold.
This is your system trying to survive by shutting down access to pain.
The Resentment You’re Ashamed to Admit
Here is the truth most women healers will not say out loud:
You start resenting the very people you want to help.
You see a name on your schedule and feel dread.
You feel irritated by “lack of progress.”
You fantasize about cancellations.
There is no shame in this.
Resentment is not a character flaw.
It is a signal of chronic self-betrayal.
Your Heart Chakra is not broken.
It is exhausted.
Why Platitudes Won’t Save You
You do not need another breathing app.
You do not need to “practice gratitude harder.”
You do not need to push through.
You need practical tools that reclaim your time, energy, and decision-making capacity.
That is why, in Week Six of In Pursuit of Soul Joy, I introduce the Power Matrix.
Decision Fatigue: The Silent Burnout Accelerator
As a clinician, you make over 35,000 decisions a day.
Treatment decisions.
Risk assessments.
Documentation calls.
Boundary negotiations.
Crisis management.
Your nervous system is in constant choice overload.
The result?
You become decisive at work—and paralyzed everywhere else.
You cannot decide:
what to eat
where to go
what you want
how to change your life
As I write in the book:
“This loop has you living in limbo, telling yourself that you’ll get to it tomorrow. But tomorrow never comes.”
The Power Matrix: Reclaiming Your Energy
The Power Matrix helps you visually map where your time and energy go.
Quadrant 1: Urgent & Important — Do Now
True emergencies and real deadlines.
Quadrant 2: Not Urgent & Important — Schedule
The work that sustains your future: boundaries, planning, healing, relationships.
Quadrant 3: Urgent & Not Important — Delegate
Everything that feels urgent because someone else made it your problem.
Quadrant 4: Not Urgent & Not Important — Delete
Time thieves, perfectionism, guilt-based yeses.
When you do this exercise, check in with your Solar Plexus Chakra—your power center.
If you feel frozen, tense, or resistant, that is not anxiety.
That is your body begging you to stop abandoning yourself.
Empathy Is Not Your Enemy
Your empathy is not the problem.
Unbounded empathy in a broken system is.
When paired with:
nervous system awareness
energetic boundaries
decision clarity
Empathy becomes a superpower again, not a biological liability.
